Fátima Tour

The recent history of Fátima is inseparable from the events related to the three little shepherds: Lúcia and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, who, in 1917, on the 13th May, witnessed the first apparition of Our Lady of Fátima while they were pasturing their flock of sheep at Cova da Iria.

The Santuário de Fátima (Fátima’s Sanctuary), located at Cova da Iria, in Fátima, is one of the world’s most important Marian sanctuaries and it is the annual destiny of thousands of Catholic pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

The Sanctuary comprises the Chapel of the Apparitions (built in 1919 and rebuilt in 1922 after having been destroyed by a bomb) and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary that was built between 1928 and 1953. The square of the Sanctuary is twice as large as St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

Besides other chapels and praying retreats, the Sanctuary complex also includes the large Church of the Holy Trinity that was consecrated in 2007. With its 8500 seats, this church is one of the largest Catholic churches in the world in terms of seating capacity.
